PR2 – In depth interview with James Cridland

PR3 – Survey on radio listening 21 people

People’s preferred ways of listening to radio

6) What is your preferred radio platform and why? I can get 2Day FM (Sydney) and CBC Radio 1 (America) only on the Internet, so internets my favorite. I can’t get Internet in the car, so DAB’s my favorite. In the room I’m currently in, I don’t have a radio, so radio on Freeview is my favorite.

7) Do you think that DAB is “dead in the water”? Internet radio has five times less listening than DAB. Do I think Internet radio is dead in the water? Of course not. Listening through the television is only a third as popular as listening to the radio on DAB. Do I think digital TV is dead in the water? Hardly.

DAB radio –benefits and why people don’t have a DAB radio.

Can’t get a good signal where I live

I never got round to buying one

I don’t know

I don’t have enough money to buy one

I don’t really listen to radio enough to want to buy one

I prefer to have a set playlist so I can pick a song depending on my mood. So I prefer MP3 and IPods. (Q7, PR3)

11 people had a DAB radio and 10 people didn’t have one

-Radio listening Research

LBC

With LBC, we can see that their listening figures have gone up by a considerable amount since the beginning of 2005. LBC went through a change of ownership between 2007 and 2008 and this could be a reason why their listening figures have gone up as much as they have. Over the last few years, LBC have become available on a number of local digital radio multiplexes across the UK, so this could also be a reason for their listening figures going up so much.

Capital FM Scotland

Capital FM Scotland has experienced a number of re-brands during its existence, so this could be a reason for its listening figures not being that steady. The station started life as Beat 106, was then re-branded as XFM Scotland (in 2006) by new owners Gcap Media and then was re-branded as Galaxy Scotland (2008) when Gcap Media was bought out by Global Radio. The station then experienced a final re-brand in January 2011 to Capital FM Scotland.

Choice FM

Choice FM’S listener-ship in London appears to have remained quite stable over the last 5 years. This could be because the music they play is quite specialist and its audience keep tuning in because no other station offers what Choice does.

Real Radio

Real Radio seems to have fewer listeners now than they did 5/6 year ago. The main reason for this is probably because of competition from other stations such as ones available in the North East on DAB. Competitor DAB stations in the area include Capital FM North East and Heart London (relay of Heart London).

   Secondary research

Source 7

It’s about Broadcast Minister Ed Vaizey confirming than FM will still be around for to come. He says that the complete switch to DAB will only happen if certain criteria is met and if listeners fully behind the policy.

http://radiotoday.co.uk/news.php?extend.6750

Reliability: radio today is a well respected website within the radio industry.

    Source 3

This article says that it could take 20 years until we completely switch to digital

How Found: I found it while on the Technology section of the Telegraph website.

Reliability: This source again is very good as it is from a reliable source. The source is from the Guardian who are well respected.

Conclusion

The main thing I found out was that radio clearly has a multi-platform future and analogue radio will without a doubt remain for a number of years to come.

With my primary research, it is clear that people currently listen to the radio using a large range of platforms which include FM radio, online, DAB, and via digital television platforms.

I have also found out that some people have preferred platforms at certain times. For example, on the way to work someone might listen to podcasts and at home listen to radio via DAB. It’s very convenient to have a number of different ways to listen to radio.

If I were to do this again, I would probably get a wider range of secondary sources focusing on Internet radio and other areas surrounding the subject as a whole.

I would also send my survey out to people of different demograhics to get a better wider picture.

(explain your answer)

Not until we have unlimited bandwidth for mobile phone users.

More and more people are going online to check facebook, twitter etc No doubt if its visual for them to click on it….internet radio will grow!

Porbably- as more people buy mobile internet device such as smart phones. DAB is getting a bit redundant, and is expensive to buy.

No, people often listen to radio in the absence of internet, eg the car

yea its handier

yes and no because radio tends to be a in car thing to listen to something

Probably more so than DAB. It’s an everyday occurance to use Internet. DAB isn’t

no radio is dying out

not really, with a normal radio you can listen anywhere and you don’t have to worry about internet connection going

No. Radio is generally for listening to when there isnt a computer/tv around to do other things on.

no beacuse how can you get it in your car its not that practical

yes, because internet speeds will increase and people will spend more time on the internet

Only if it becomes more affordable for mobile use

no, because you cant take your laptop everywhere with you!

if it will be more readily avaliable in transport

In the near future, I don’t think so. When internet radio is more accesible and streaming speeds improve, internet radio could start to takeover. I think FM will still be the most popular medium for at least another 15 years.

Yeah because everything now is internet based and if radio wants to stay relevant then internet radio will be the future

It’s not, because you can’t fit a computer or laptop in your pocket. However, you can fit an iPod in your pocket, so that might be the future of radio as you can take it anywhere

Yes, people spend much more time surfing the internet and whilst they’re doing that, it’d be easier for them to play the radio from the internet as well, rather than getting up to turn on their digital radio or TV

9) If yes, what internet radio stations do/have you listened to?

977 The 80s Channel

spin fm

Dubai 92

BBC 1 xtra, choice FM, Radio 1’s internet station and BRIT FM!!!!!!!!!

www.burstradio.co.uk and Mostly fm and dab stations via the Internet

Brit FM

I listen to FM stations online which I can’t get on FM where I live. Stations I listen to include BRMB, WAVE 105 and FM104.

BBC Radio 1

8) Do you listen to internet radio stations?

8) Do you listen to internet radio stations?

7) If you don't have a DAB digital radio, why don't you?

Can’t get good signal where i live

Never got round to buying one

i dont know

no money

they’re useless

It costs money to buy it and i dont have money.

i don’t really listen to radio enough to want to buy one

I prefer to have a set playlist so I can pick a song depending on my mood. So I prefer MP3 and Ipods.

6) What do you think are the benefits of DAB digital radio?

When you can get a signal, it is very crisp and clear, with no interference.

More choice

Good range of stations from across the country

more good stations such as 6music, better quality service, radio shows channel / text information

You can get more channels

i don’t know

Clearer sound but not comparable in all areas.

none

better signal, more choice of radio stations

More channels, more radio

clear sound

clear reception when listening to radio

More choice

good sound

There is a wider choice of stations and the sound quailtiy is better overall.

sound quality is better

You can easily tune in to any channel you want, it’s easier to operate.

Channels are auto-tuned in - easy to look through radio channels because you don’t have to search through static for a decent station

5) Do you own a DAB Digital radio?

5) Do you own a DAB Digital radio?

4) At what time of the day do you usually listen to the radio? Do you have prefered platforms at different times of the day?

No I always stick to FM, and I listen mostly in the evenings

Late at night and daytime.

Late night 10pm - 2am

Morning- on the way to work in the car, also podcasts and morinig - digital radio

drivetime

9 no

7 and 5

FM

Morning or evening in the car. No.morning, I only ever listen to the radio in the car on the way to school

night time after 10pm… they don’t really censor the music at that timenight pirate station or late night specialist shows

FM in the morning to wake me upanytime, in the car.

I mostly listen to the radio in the car. I switch between all radio stations so I listen to varies different radio stations at varies different times.I listen on the way to and from college and during the evenings too. When I’m traveling, I’ll listen via FM but if I am at home I may listen via sky/digital radio or the internet.

Either 8.30-9am (on the way to college) or 10pm-12am (on the way back from places: friends’ houses, parties etc.) I usually always prefer FM radio, it doesn’t tend to be affected by the time of day.In the afternoon - the same platform

3) How much time do you spend listening to the radio on a daily...

3) How much time do you spend listening to the radio on a daily basis?

Question 2 - What is your preferred platform and why?

FM, as i can always get a signal, unlike DAB which can be difficult to find.

DAB - Ease of use.

digital radio- more good stations such as 6music, better quality service

FM radio, as I usually listen in the car.

FM

Online because its easier

FM. Easiest most accessible

FM Radio, its simple.

digital TV because then i can listen to it really loud and get a good reception for it

Online cause it’s usually free and has great selections to choose from.

Capital. good music and funny presenters

FM just becuase it is easily avaliable

I prefer FM becasue it’s the most accessible.

I prefer radio stations like Magic and Choice

FM radio

I mostly listen to the radio in the car so I only have the choice between FM and AM. I prefer FM Radio because it has more commercial stations which I find better to listen to

This is a graph showing my results for the question: What...

This is a graph showing my results for the question: What platforms do you use to listen to radio?

From this it is clear that the most favored platform for the 21 people that filled in my survey is FM. The least favoured is AM.

Primary Research 2: In depth Interview with James Cridland - Founder and director of Media UK

1) what radio stations do you listen to and why do they appeal to you? I listen to a lot – LBC 97.3 or BBC Radio 4 wake me up, though occasionally I listen to BBC Radio 2. In the car, it’s BBC Radio 5 Live, or LBC News 1152, orAbsolute Radio. I also enjoy some of the Absolute decade stations, Chill, 2Day FM, ABC Brisbane, CBC Radio 1 and WBAI.

2) if analogue radio was switched off tomorrow, how would you continue to listen to the stations that you’ve mentioned? I can’t think of a time when I’ve listened to analogue radio over the last five years, with the exception of very occasional use of FM radio on my mobile phone. No real reason, other than convenience: I’ve nothing against FM (though have rather a bit against music on AM, being honest).

3) Do you listen to Internet radio stations? If yes, which ones?

4) If you don’t listen to Internet radio, what would make you listen to them? I listen to the radio. Radio is multi-platform. I don’t choose radio based on what waveband, platform or codec it uses. I just listen to great radio, however it gets to me. I am not unusual.

5) in what ways could Internet radio be improved? Don’t care much. I’ve got lots of ideas for how radio might be improved. Isn’t that more important?

6) what is your preferred radio platform and why? I can get 2Day FM and CBC Radio 1 only on the internet, so internet’s my favourite. I can’t get internet in the car, so DAB’s my favourite. In the room I’m currently in, I don’t have a radio, so radio on Freeview is my favourite. The future of radio is multi-platform.

7) Do you think that DAB is “dead in the water”? Internet radio has five times less listening than DAB. Do I think internet radio is dead in the water? Of course not. Listening through the television is only a third as popular as listening to the radio on DAB. Do I think digital TV is dead in the water? Hardly. Why would I think such a successful platform is “dead in the water”?

8) The current proposed switch off date is 2017. Do you think this date will be met? If not, when do you think the switch off will take place? Here’s my thoughts on that. But, in order: “no but that’s not a problem”; and “not all at once”. The future of radio is multi-platform – just like television (hello, Sky, Freesat, IP, Freeview, analogue). It’s not a fight between platforms. Don’t try to make it so.

Primary Research 1 - Radio listening figures research

Absolute Radio listening figures

The Frank Skinner Show

Broadcast between 8am-10am on Saturdays.

According to Absolute Radio and the latest RAJAR results, these are the listening figures for Frank’s show:

Live listeners: 252,000 per week – (highest listening figures for this timeslot for 2 ½ years since Q2 08 up 15%)

Podcasts of the show downloaded per week: 171,000 (6.5 million downloads since the show started in March 2009.

Listening figures research for other uk radio stations

Average weekly reach for each year (rounded to the nearest 100,000)

BRMB

2010 – 353,000

2009 – 386,000

2008 – 397,000

2007 – 401,000

2006 – 496,000

2005 – 482,000

From these figures, we can that BRMB’s weekly reach in an average week last year is less than 100,000 than what the figure was in 2005. There are many things which could be factors in this. Factors include: Ownership changes and more competition from DAB and possibly internet stations too.

Capital FM Birmingham (was Galaxy Birmingham)

2010 – 384,000

2009 – 364,000

2008 – 400,000

2007 – 357,000

2006 – 327,000

2005 – 356,000

Capital FM Birmingham seems to have (on average) more people listening per week then they did in 2005. The figures aren’t that far apart from each other though.

Choice FM London

2010 – 500,000

2009 – 515,000

2008 – 506,000

2007 – 520,000

2006 – 523,000

2005 – 521,000

Choice FM’S listenership in London appears to have remained quite stable over the last 5 years. This could be because the music they play is quite specialist and its audience keep tuning in because no other station offers what Choice does.

LBC 97.3

2010 – 933,000

2009 – 810,000

2008 – 643,000

2007 – 615,000

2006 – 591,000

2005 – 592,000

With LBC, we can see that their listening figures have gone up by a considerable amount since the beginning of 2005. LBC went through a change of ownership between 2007 and 2008 and this could be a reason why their listening figures have gone up as much as they have. Over the last few years, LBC have become available on a number of local digital radio multiplexes across the UK, so this could also be a reason for their listening figures going up so much.

Capital FM Scotland (was Galaxy FM Scotland)
2010 - 431,000
2009 - 241,00
2008 - 208,000
2007 -253,000
2006 - 314,000
2005 - 375,000

Capital FM Scotland has experienced a number of rebrands during its existence, so this could be a reason for its listening figures not being that steady. The station started life as Beat 106, was then rebranded as XFM Scotland (in 2006) by new owners Gcap Media and then was rebranded as Galaxy Scotland (2008) when Gcap Media was bought out by Global Radio. The station then experienced a final rebrand in January 2011 to Capital FM Scotland.

Metro Radio

2010 – 372,000

2009 – 405,000

2008 – 410,000

2007 – 435,000

2006 – 355,000

2005 – 440,000

Metro Radio’s listening figures have clearly gone done since 2005. This could suggest that some of its listeners from before are listening to other stations due to the wide choice of other stations which are available on DAB and FM.

Real Radio (North East)

2010 – 303,000

2009 – 355,000

2008 – 453,000

2007 – 482,000

2006 – 503,000

2005 – 469,000

Real Radio seems to have fewer listeners now than they did 5/6 year ago. The main reason for this is probably because of competition from other stations such as ones available in the North East on DAB. Competitor DAB stations in the area include Capital FM North East and Heart London (relay of Heart London).

Smooth Radio London

2010 – 476,000

2009 – 537,000

2008 – 522,000

2007 – 482,000

2006 – 488,000

2005 – 570,000

Smooth Radio London seem to have a quite a large listenship which has fallen and gone back up again over the last 5 years. A reason for the drop of just over 60,000 listeners between the start of 2009 and the end of 2010 could be due to Smooth becoming a national station with all programming coming from Manchester.

Quote from book: “Digital signals have both advantages and disadvantages as compared with analogue. Perhaps their greatest advantage is their relative immunity to degradation as they are subjected to the distortions of transmission and recording systems. When analogy signals are passed through a series of transmission or recording mediums, they are progressively degraded in signal to noise ratio, linearity, and possibly in bandwidth.”

Reliability: The book which this extract from taken from isn’t really that reliably because it was written in 1990. It does talk about some disadvantages of digital mediums though, so it does have some relevance.

Reliability: As this book was written in 1990, it isn’t that reliable and doesn’t have a lot of relevance to my research as I am not researching AM.

Who wrote it? You need to decide if the website can be trusted. Even if there is a lot of good information on website, you might not trust it if the design of it is bad. Is their view bias or are they speaking as an outsider?

What? What exactly is written?

When? It is important to know when somthing was written becasue you wouldn’t want to use somthing which is out of date. Information written in October 2010 will probably be of more use to you than somthing which was written in July 2003.

Why? You need to know exactly why you need the information. Is the person covering the subject in question from a certain angle?
